چکیده

We demonstrate a self-selective metal adsorption and pattern transformation process on vicinal Si 111 surfaces. When Au atoms are deposited onto the self-organized periodic Si 111 surface patterns, the Au atoms self-select to adsorb predominantly onto one of the two distinct domains, the Si 111 terrace or the stepbunched facet at different Au coverage. This leads to a systematic transformation of the surface pattern, whose domain population changes while its periodicity remains intact with the increasing Au coverage. A stressdomain model is used to explain the observed phenomenon. Our findings suggest a unique method for controlled functionalization of surfaces at the nanoscale, as illustrated further by domain-selective self-assembly of uniform CoSi2 nanoclusters on the Au-functionalized vicinal Si 111 surface.

Molecular self-assembly of functionalized fullerenes on a metal surface.

We present a combined experimental and theoretical study of the self-assembly of C60 molecules functionalized with long alkane chains on the (111) surface of silver. We find that the conformation of the functionalized C60 changes upon adsorption on Ag(111) and that the unit cell size in the self-assembled monolayer is determined by the interactions between the functional groups. We show that C6...

Dynamic in situ characterization of organic monolayer formation via a Novel substrate-mediated mechanism.

Ultrahigh vacuum scanning tunneling microscopy data investigating octylsilane (C8H17SiH3) monolayer pattern formation on Au(111) are presented. The irregular monolayer pattern exhibits a 60 A length scale. Formation of the octylsilane monolayer relaxes the Au(111) 23 x square root3 surface reconstruction and ejects surface Au atoms. Au adatom diffusion epitaxially extends the Au(111) crystal la...

Self-organized nanoscale pattern formation on vicinal Si(111) surfaces via a two-stage faceting transition.

We demonstrate a self-organized pattern formation on vicinal Si(111) surfaces that are miscut toward the [2;11] direction. All the patterns, consisting of a periodic array of alternating (7 x 7) reconstructed terraces and step-bunched facets, have the same periodicity and facet structure, independent of the miscut angle, while the width of the facets increases linearly with miscut angle. We att...

Evolution of surface morphology of vicinal Si(111) surfaces after aluminum deposition

We have studied changes in surface morphology of vicinal Si(111) surfaces with a miscut of 1.3° in the [2:11] direction after Al deposition at elevated temperatures. The clean surface phase separates into a (111)-oriented phase and a stepped phase. Submonolayer Al deposition at 650°C, the normal preparation temperature of the Al/Si(111)-(E3×E3)R30° structure, only induces minor changes in the s...

Conformational adaptation and selective adatom capturing of tetrapyridyl-porphyrin molecules on a copper (111) surface.

We present a combined low-temperature scanning tunneling microscopy and near-edge X-ray adsorption fine structure study on the interaction of tetrapyridyl-porphyrin (TPyP) molecules with a Cu(111) surface. A novel approach using data from complementary experimental techniques and charge density calculations allows us to determine the adsorption geometry of TPyP on Cu(111). The molecules are cen...
